Munich Airport completes rollout of CT technology in T2 for more comfort, safety and efficiency

Munich Airport has opened the fully modernised central security lanes in Terminal 2. The 15 lanes include cutting-edge Computed Tomography (CT) scanners to optimise processes for passengers and staff, while significantly enhancing overall security standards.

The new equipment offers greater convenience for passengers. Up to four passengers can present their hand baggage for screening at the same time, while electronic devices and liquids no longer have to be removed. The CT scanners also provide enhanced security by automatically detecting explosives in every piece of baggage. This, combined with the 3D view of the screening images, makes work easier for the security staff, resulting in fewer follow-up checks and even more time saved at the security checkpoint.

“The new security lanes are one of the most important quality features at our airport,” said Jost Lammers, CEO, Munich Airport. “Just in time for the first major travel season of the year, our passengers can now benefit from the latest and safest technology, more efficient processes and noticeably more comfort. These are the standards we, as an international premium hub, want to fulfil together with our partners. We owe it to the outstanding commitment of everyone involved that we were able to complete this complex conversion ahead of schedule during ongoing operations.”

In October 2022, reconstruction work started on the central security checkpoint in Terminal 2. In addition to the now completed regular lanes, two further security lanes with CT scanners will be built by the end of 2025, which will offer greater convenience, especially to families with small children and travellers with limited mobility. The planned conversion measures for Terminal 1 will be completed by the beginning of the 2026 summer vacation period. With the new scanners, the airport aims to take a decisive step towards innovative modernisation.

“Today is an important step towards the future,” said Jens Ritter, CEO, Lufthansa Airlines. “The common goal of the airport and us is to offer a premium product as well as reliability and punctuality. The CT scanners are a perfect fit for this. Our guests will now be able to get to their gate faster and enjoy Terminal 2 even more relaxed.”
