Schiphol Group – a Corporate Partner of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub – has updated its website and app to provide travellers with real-time insight into the time they spend at the airport after landing. By cleverly combining up-to-date walking and waiting times, Schiphol provides a clear and reliable overview of the journey through the terminal – from landing to leaving the airport.
For travellers without checked baggage, the expected walking time and possible waiting time at passport control are shown immediately. For travellers with checked baggage, exit time is determined by the longest waiting time, either at passport control or baggage reclaim. This development means that travellers know when they’ll be standing outside again with their suitcases, or which train they can catch to continue their journey. It’s also convenient for people picking travellers up from Schiphol – by checking the web page or app, they know exactly when to expect someone.
“With this innovation we are taking an important step towards better information provision,” said Sander van Tienhoven, Product Owner, Royal Schiphol Group. “Research conducted by Schiphol among passengers shows that having insight into possible walking and waiting times at the airport is highly appreciated, especially for arriving travellers. Integrating recently developed baggage waiting time predictions and walking times, the model accurately calculates the total time at the airport after landing. That’s not only nice for travellers, but also for the people picking them up.”
Since 2024, travellers have been able to check, down to the minute, when their baggage will arrive on the belt. Schiphol has developed a self-learning data model that uses 13 different data sources to predict baggage reclaim and passport control waiting times. By aggregating walking times and expected waiting times at the baggage belt and potentially at passport control, travellers can now get a complete overview of their time at Schiphol.
