American Airlines has become the latest legacy carrier to introduce a “Basic Economy” fare, with limitations akin to what passengers would expect from a low-cost carrier.
The no-frills Basic Economy fare doesn’t allow passengers to select a seat when booking and doesn’t include a carry-on bag, except for a personal item that can fit underneath the seat in front. Also, passengers choosing this fare type are not eligible for upgrade and they will be in the last boarding group. The upside is that the Basic Economy fare will be cheaper than the carrier’s economy class (Main Cabin) option. The new fare will not be offered on all American services.
The launch of a Basic Economy ticket follows a similar move by United Airlines in November 2016. Delta Air Lines also offers a Basic Economy fare.
Commenting on American’s new fare type, American Airlines President Robert Isom spelled out that the Basic Economy option “gives American the ability to compete more effectively with the growing number of ultra low-cost carriers”.
He added: “Our goal is to make sure that all customers have the opportunity to purchase a ticket on American that works for their specific needs.”
