Katowice Airport to build modern new central passenger terminal designed with functionality and flexibility

Katowice Airport has announced plans for its investment programme for 2024-2028. The biggest project planned is construction of a new central passenger terminal, which will account for PLN 950 million (€220m) of the total estimated PLN 1.5 billion (€345m) cost of the investment programme.

The new 49,000sqm terminal will have two storeys, with the check-in area and arrivals hall located on the ground floor, while the first floor will be home to central security control, passport control and the departures hall.

In 2028, after putting the first part of the central passenger terminal into service, the total surface of the terminal infrastructure will be 83,000sqm, enabling Katowice Airport to handle 8 million passengers a year. In the future, there are plans to continue the terminal’s expansion, so that by 2032 terminal infrastructure will grow to 96,000sqm and a capacity of 10 million annual passengers. After 2032, if such a need arises, the central terminal may be modularly expanded to the east, in the first phase reaching a throughput of the entire terminal infrastructure of 12 million passengers, and 15 million passengers in the second phase.

“We have prepared a complex programme for the expansion of Katowice Airport’s infrastructure, as part of which we put emphasis on diversity of provided infrastructure,” said Artur Tomasik, President of the Board of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA), the company managing Katowice Airport. “Katowice Airport needs a modern terminal, planned so that its functionality and flexibility allow it to handle the dynamically – and often unpredictably – changing traffic. Simultaneously, with sustainable development in mind, it is necessary to carefully manage resources.”
