KLM adds audio description to IFE on long-haul flights

Audio description makes films and television programmes accessible to blind and visually impaired people.

KLM now offers movies with audio description on its inflight entertainment (IFE) system for blind and visually impaired passengers. This new service is available onboard its Boeing 777 and 787-operated intercontinental flights.

The first movies available with audio description are Home Again, Kingsman, The Golden Circle and Lego Ninjago Movie. More movies will be added in the coming months.

Audio description makes films and television programmes accessible to blind and visually impaired people.

A narrator describes all the visual elements during breaks in dialogues, and explains the characters, facial expressions, their location and plot developments.

KLM is not the first airline to offer audio description for visually impaired passengers. Emirates claimed that title back in 2014, while in November 2017 Virgin Atlantic launched a portable IFE solution for passengers with visual impairment.
