Monarch Airlines is preparing to launch an Apple Watch app that will allow passengers to order food, drinks and duty free products from their seat, via their smartwatch.
The carrier is working with Media inMotion on the development of the MPlayer Apple Watch app, which will work seamlessly with Monarch’s existing MPlayer IFE app, which offers access to movies, digital magazines and destination-related reviews.
The Apple Watch app will allow passengers to browse F&B and duty free items without interrupting the streaming experience on their smartphone or tablet. The Apple Watch app also shows flight time and distance remaining, current altitude and ground speed, as well as real-time weather updates for the destination airport.
Monarch Airlines Head of Digital and Online Ian Chambers said: “This development to the MPlayer App is just another example of how Monarch are looking to lead the field in superior customer service and simplifying processes for customers and our cabin crew colleagues.”
Other functionalities being explored during the ongoing development phase include push notifications to notify passengers of “flash sales”, smart wallet and Apple Pay compatibility, and device handoff, which would allow passengers to start a transaction on one device and complete it on another.
